The contract is reportedly for 2 years, $7 million ($3.5M cap-hit).

I should feel good about picking the exacta perfectly in the Transylvania, but the other races let me down. Still, I feel much better after cashing a superfecta that cost 10 cents and paid over $300. Much better.

Jamie Langenbrunner gets to go from the bottom straight to the top.

The Devils, who are sitting in the NHL cellar with a 10-28-2 record for 22 points, moved their captain Friday morning. Jamie Langenbrunner was sent to the Dallas Stars, the team from which he was originally acquired.

www.sporcle.com is awesome. It’s a great place to waste time.

If you’ve never heard of it, basically it is a website that gives you the topic to a list of people, places, or things, and you have a certain amount on time to guess all the answers in the list.

Alot of people think fighting in hockey is just about two meat heads who feel like kicking the crap out of each other but it has much more to do with intimidation, defending your team mates and getting into the other teams head.

Lets get the loss out of the way by saying: yes, we should have beat Anaheim and played rather ridiculously according my my snobby, high-nosed standards. We did play, however, like we have all year, which is to say we underachieved.

“We want him to get better, but we needed to obviously part ways with Sean. It's amicable. The Stars need to move on; the team needs to move on…”

Comments made by Dallas Stars co-general manager Brett Hull tell the tale of Avery’s future and how the team has decided to rip away his chances of playing with the organization again.  This decision by Stars’ management puts an end to a 23-game stint for Avery with the Texas team, who are currently 11-14-4, placing them last in the Western Conference.

One of the things that bothers me most in sports is when superstars switch teams. This especially bugs me when it comes to the NBA, and it happens more and more as the years go on. Think about some of the best players of all time Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Bill Russell to name a few, they never switched teams. You can pretty much count Michael Jordan in that group too, most people do not even count his years in Washington.

David Stern is one of the most PR savvy commissioners that we have ever seen run a major sports league in this country, but his latest handling of the Tim Donaghy situation might shade his legacy in a negative light.

Before you say anything, I know, I know, I know, but this side gig (as enriching as it is) doesn’t exactly pay the bills (or the bar tab, whatever the case may be) at all, so I’ve been putting most of my energy into my alter ego. Dave the outdoor enthusiast and salesman, which hasn’t exactly left me with enough time to really share any of my sports related nuggets of wisdom with y’all.  BY the way, at this time I’d like to just put it out there that I am submitting applications for an unpaid internship position as my research assistant (quick, find me Ryan Howard’s OPS!) and stenographer (translation: follow me to the bar with a tape recorder to find out what I really think about Derek Jeter).  Send in a résumé and a cover letter, and I’ll let you know.

Is it true? Are there less athletes in baseball today than ever? That's what they say, what they've been saying for years now. The athletic, talented kid who can run and jump and hit and catch better than you or I isn't playing baseball anymore. If it doesn't involve a football or a basketball, our truly athletic American kids aren't playing it. Baseball is slow. Doesn't grab the interests of kids. The game hasn't evolved. It's bad on TV. There are less fields in the inner city. It's expensive to play with equipment and travel leagues. Although there may be some apparent truth to some or all of these arguments, there are several factors to consider on the contrary.

Welcome to my first sports blog!

No need to wait until June- Alex Ovechkin is your Hart Trophy winner.  Here are the winners for Round 2 of the 2008 NHL Playoffs:

The “thanks for showing up” award goes to Sean Avery’s spleen, which ruptured along with the Rangers playoff hopes in Game 3 at the Garden.  In a series where the Rangers needed to find a way to get uberstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeny Malkin off their game, Avery was held in check.  Luckily, he all but wrapped up a new contract in the previous series against the New Jersey Devils.

The play of Roger Mason last night(31 points), and throughout the season, has been incredibly encouraging if you are a wizards fan. The almost robotic form on his shot has led to him shooting 40% from downtown this year. He's already come up huge several games this year with clutch shooting, but more importantly, he may be the key to postseason success for the Wizards. The playoffs are unique because you have the best teams with the best players battling for ego supremacy and a championship. So unlike a majority of games when the dominant players on dominant teams can take over games and almost single-handedly carry their squads to victory, the playoffs allow for very little of that. Now, of course that doesn't mean never(how many times did Jordan just say "give me the ball" and the game was over, or when Lebron scored 25 of his teams last 29 points to beat the Pistons in the playoffs last year) but it does mean that it wont happen every game, or even a majority of games.

This is something that I really am a lost for words. Every year the NFL stages a Pro Bowl where players are voted for and chosen to play in this annual event in Hawaii. Maybe it's because it's Hawaii is the reason the NFL continues to stage this ultimate boring game. They changed the rules so no one can get hurt, but they do. Many players seem to pass on it a couple of weeks before the time of the game. IT just seems like a waste of time anymore.

Withh all the things going on in Major League baseball maybe they should rename it the Hall of Shame. Baseball's Hall of Fame could be without some great players depending on how the voters vote after the Mitchell report came out and talk about steroid use as the main problem in the last ten years in baseball. Some of the game's biggest stars were implicated in the drug scandal. Names like Bonds, Petitte, Clemens were just a few of the names that surfaced. I wonder how many people have used it but never caught. Bet that would be a very intersting number.
